"Aghathiyaa" (2025) is a Tamil-language historical horror action comedy film directed by Pa. Vijay. The narrative intertwines two timelines, blending elements of supernatural mystery, traditional medicine, and colonial history.
In the present day, Aghathiyaa (Jiiva) is a struggling art director who, after his latest film project collapses, decides to convert an old French colonial mansion in Puducherry into a haunted house attraction to recoup his losses. Assisted by his fiancée, Veena (Raashii Khanna), they stumble upon an antique piano during renovations. Playing the piano triggers supernatural events, leading them to uncover the mansion's dark past.
The story then shifts to the 1940s, under French colonial rule. Siddharthan (Arjun Sarja), a renowned practitioner of Siddha medicine, is summoned to treat Jacqueline Poovizhi, the paralyzed sister of the tyrannical colonial administrator, Edwin Duplex (Edward Sonnenblick). Siddharthan's miraculous healing abilities not only restore Jacqueline's mobility but also expose the oppressive nature of Duplex's regime.
As Aghathiyaa delves deeper into the mansion's history, he learns of Siddharthan's tragic fate and Duplex's atrocities. Realizing that Siddharthan's ancient remedies might hold the key to curing his mother's cancer, Aghathiyaa becomes entwined in a spectral battle between the benevolent spirit of Siddharthan and the vengeful ghost of Duplex. This confrontation transcends time, linking the past and present in a climactic showdown.
"Aghathiyaa" explores themes of colonial oppression, traditional healing practices, and the enduring impact of history on the present. The film combines elements of horror, fantasy, and action, offering a unique cinematic experience.
